Sons of Ben

The Sons of Ben is a 501(c) (3) Pennsylvania based non-profit, membership organization.

The Sons of Ben, founded in January 2007, exists to support and develop the Delaware Valley soccer community. Through active, grassroots support, the Sons of Ben helped establish the momentum leading to the creation of the Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer (MLS) and the Philadelphia Independence of the Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) league. In forging a relationship with Chester City, Delaware County and Pennsylvania State political leaders along with Major League Soccer, the vocal support of the group directly influenced the decision to award Philadelphia with an MLS franchise.

The Sons of Ben have provided a social outlet for soccer supporters to share common interests and be part of a larger community of sports fans in the 4th largest American media market. The organization has grown to include over 5,000 members throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and around the world. The Sons of Ben have also grown to oversee the Delaware Valley Infantry, a US Soccer supporters group based in Philadelphia region, and the Daughters of Betsy, a Philadelphia Independence (WPS) supporters group.
Charitable and philanthropic efforts have been central to the Sons of Ben since its founding, as evidenced by annual initiatives supporting the Bernardine Center in Chester, PA through its Help Kick Hunger campaign and ongoing efforts to support various other organizations close to the Delaware Valley soccer community.

The coming months will start a new chapter in the organizations noteworthy story with many historical events marking the arrival of the Philadelphia Union, Philadelphia Independence and the Sons of Ben into the national spotlight.

A Word From Tim Sosar

Tim is the former Sons of Ben, Director of Tifo and is now Feedback/Membership Coordinator.

When I originally signed on to the Sons of Ben mailing list and started receiving the 'Nack six years ago, I saw them as a group with a common bond and focus.  A collection of individuals who together formed something much greater. As the years rolled along, and the Union was both created and began to play, that group became a family, and the family grew. Through the thick and thin that we've witnessed from The River End to the off-field moments and experiences that have forged our relationships, we have experienced a great deal in a short amount of time.  As the Sons of Ben continue under new leadership, it is important for us to continue the traditions established by our predecessors and maintain an identity as both a group of dedicated Union supporters as well as positive contributing members of the community.

As many of you know, I served as the Tifo Director last year and during that time, enjoyed the input and assistance of many.  I'm glad to see that effort and creativity continue in other hands, as I begin a new assignment, one designed to serve the membership of the Sons of Ben as the Feedback/Membership Coordinator.

What this Board position entails is acting as the recipient to the feedback and requests for information that is received through the new and improved Sons of Ben website.  I will respond to your inquiries directly, or make sure that you hear from the appropriate Board member.  I am also available to you on Game Days, and will be happy to spend time talking matters of importance to you or getting you information.

This season has been trying, to say the least.  We continue to stand strong.  There's still a lot of soccer to be played, and I want to help make sure we continue to stand strong together.
