A Word From Jeffrey Mitchell- Social Media Director, Sons of Ben

The past two weeks the world has been fixated on the greatest competition in all of sports the World Cup. Meanwhile I have been fixated on my all-time favorite competition the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.  The U.S. Open Cup is 16 years older than the World Cup and is the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the U.S. at 100 years old. The thing that makes USOC interesting to me is that it is open to all United States Soccer Federation affiliated teams, from amateur adult club teams to the professional clubs of Major League Soccer. In the Union's brief history we have squared off against non-MLS teams like the Rochester Rhinos, Ocean City Nor'easters, Harrisburg City Islanders, and the New York Cosmos. Playing teams from different tiers of American soccer makes for some of the best River End chants and antics you will ever witness.

The Union will be doing their best to live up to the legacy of the team their third kit pays homage to local 5 Time U.S. Open Cup Champions Bethlehem Steel FC. Three more wins = One U.S. Open Cup Trophy for the Philadelphia Union. I hope you will all consider attending the next USOC game with me on Tuesday July 8th at PPL Park.
